Image of the Month - November

Waxwing playing with it's food

Another first for me to see this winter migrant, the stunning and beautiful waxwing.  This year has been a bumper year for berries and the rowan is one of it's favourites.  They eat two or three times it's own body weight in a day!  Usually perched in the tree tops, but comes lower to find food. They first arrive in October/November and normally stay until April. First sightings are often along the east coast, but groups rapidly travel inland in their search for food.

As I had not seen let alone photograph these birds before I did not know what to expect.  So I observe their behaviour first and see how approachable they are. After a few sessions I found myself in absolute awe of these fascinating birds and thoroughly enjoyed watching and observing their behaviour as much as trying to capture some images.
